SEO and GEO are not two competing programmes, and they are not two versions of the same article. They share one content infrastructure but optimise for different outcomes. SEO helps a page get discovered, understood and ranked in search. GEO asks whether the content can enter a generative engine’s candidate sources, be used accurately, and be attributed when an answer is assembled.
That distinction matters because “make AI remember your brand” is not an actionable technical goal. Generative search retrieves sources, synthesises an answer and, in some products, provides citations. The original GEO research defines its goal as improving a website’s visibility in generative-engine responses and measures that visibility through source attribution; it does not promise that a brand will remain permanently in a model’s memory. The original GEO paper
The short answer: SEO is the foundation; GEO is an additional measurement layer
Google’s guidance for AI Overviews and AI Mode is unusually direct: existing SEO best practices remain relevant, there are no additional AI-search requirements, and no special schema or AI file is required to appear in Google’s AI features. Google Search Central: AI Features and Your Website
That does not make GEO useless. It means GEO should not be sold as a way around crawlability, indexing, relevance or authority. Use one content system and two review lenses:
| Dimension | SEO asks | GEO asks |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | Can search engines crawl, index and rank the page? | Can a retrieval system access and attribute the source? |
| Content unit | How does the page satisfy a query? | Can a paragraph, table or fact stand on its own? |
| Outcome | Impressions, clicks, CTR, rankings and conversions | Mentions, citations, citation position and description accuracy |
| Technical base | HTML, canonical, speed, internal links and sitemap | The same base, plus clear entity and evidence relationships |
These are not two production lines. They are two acceptance tests for the same asset.
Why one content system can create two kinds of value
Useful search content already has several properties generative systems need: a clear topic, organised information, verifiable facts and an accessible page. The difference is that a search visitor can use the whole page to build context, while a generative engine may retrieve only the passages relevant to the intent and place them inside a new answer.
That creates a concrete writing requirement: an important paragraph should still make sense when removed from the article. It should contain the claim, the evidence and the boundary. A conclusion in one paragraph, a number in the next and a condition in a footnote leave the passage incomplete.
This is not a “30-to-80-word summary” trick. It is an information-integrity test. A sentence without a subject, scope or basis may be retrieved, but it is not safe to quote.
A five-step loop for real questions and measurable pages
1. Start with repeated user questions, not a keyword list
Reddit, industry communities, sales notes, support conversations and customer objections reveal context that keyword tools do not always show. Record not only what people search, but why they hesitate, what they compare, what they fear and what condition would change their choice.
“How do I check backlinks?” is an awareness question. “Which backlink-checking method fits a B2B SaaS team?” is a comparison question. “Who should own backlink auditing?” is a procurement and process question. Those questions should not be forced into one keyword article.
2. Validate demand with Search Console, without treating volume as truth
Search Console tells you which queries have actually produced impressions for your site, which pages appeared, and roughly where they appeared. It does not reveal the whole market, and one impression does not prove durable demand. Semrush or Ahrefs can add demand and competition estimates, but those are planning signals, not substitutes for first-party performance.
Traffichood’s early GSC data shows the distinction. In the complete 2026-08-15 to 2026-09-11 window, the site recorded 283 impressions, 2 clicks and an average position of 78.4. One article about checking backlinks in Google Search accounted for 275 impressions. That proves Google tested the page; the position shows that the page had not won the topic. The sample covers only a few days, and Search Console marked data after 2026-09-11 as incomplete, so this is an early observation, not a growth case study. Traffichood’s technical SEO service uses this kind of query-and-page evidence before recommending an editorial change.
3. Send different intents to different pages
At minimum, a durable content system distinguishes four page jobs:
| Intent | Suitable page | The page should answer |
|---|---|---|
| Awareness | Industry guide or explainer | What is this, and why does it matter? |
| Comparison | Comparison page, selection table or method page | How do the options differ, and who fits each one? |
| Risk | Test notes, certifications or FAQ | What can fail, and how can it be checked? |
| Procurement | Service page, case study or contact page | What is delivered, how does it start, and how is it measured? |
This serves both systems. Search engines can match a page to an intent more cleanly, while generative systems can retrieve evidence on the page that actually owns the question. The Evidence Loop method is the site’s operating model for connecting those observations to a review point.
4. Turn important claims into self-contained evidence units
Use this template when reviewing a load-bearing paragraph:
Claim: What is the conclusion?
Evidence: What number, source, test or observation supports it?
Conditions: What sample, timeframe or exception limits it?
Do not write “structured content dramatically improves GEO performance.” A defensible version is: “In the 2023 GEO study, adding citations and statistics improved source visibility in that study’s experimental setting; the result depended on its corpus, query set and generative engine, so it is not a forecast for every website.” Readers and models can tell what the claim actually covers.
5. Put the data back into the question library
Each month, return Search Console queries, page positions, user questions, sales objections and AI-answer samples to one editorial backlog. A page with impressions but a position below 50 usually needs better topical coverage, internal links or authority—not a meta-description rewrite first. A page with meaningful impressions in positions 8–20 is a better candidate for title, snippet and intent testing.
The technical layer: what helps, and what not to mythologise
Schema helps understanding; it is not a citation ticket
Traffichood already emits Article, Organization, Service, Breadcrumb and selected FAQ JSON-LD for appropriate pages. Article markup should identify a real author, publication date and modification date. Organization markup should connect only to profiles the brand controls. FAQPage should mark up only questions and answers that users can actually see.
Structured data provides explicit clues about page type and field relationships. Google’s documentation says correct structured data can make a page eligible for certain rich results, but does not guarantee that a rich result will appear or that rankings will improve. Google: General Structured Data Guidelines
FAQPage should especially not be described as “the format AI likes best”. Since 2023, Google has limited FAQ rich results primarily to authoritative government and health sites. For a normal commercial site, the main value of FAQ content is making a visible question-and-answer clear to readers and machines—not expecting an expanded SERP card. Google: Changes to FAQ rich results
`llms.txt` is an experiment, not a Google requirement
An `llms.txt` file can act as a curated content directory for people or experimental tools, but it should not be described as a way to increase AI citation rate. Google currently says that Google Search does not need new AI text files or special markup to appear in its AI search features. Google’s guide to generative AI search
If you keep one, its engineering purpose should be modest: generate it from the same brand, service and content data as the site, so it does not become a second sitemap that goes stale. It is a low-cost experiment, not a ranking guarantee.
robots.txt: make crawling possible before deciding what to limit
If a page is blocked from Googlebot or a retrieval crawler, excellent structure does not help. Check robots.txt, CDN rules, authentication, canonical URLs, sitemaps and whether the main text is available to an anonymous crawler. Do not accidentally block CSS, JavaScript or content resources, and do not present “AI crawler access allowed” as a guarantee of citation.
Product Schema is not a wrapper for every business page
Product markup belongs on real products and variants. A B2B service page should not be disguised as a Product for GEO. If a price is not public, do not invent `price`. Use Service, Organization, WebPage and Article types that match the facts on the page. The basic rule is simple: structured data must represent content users can see.
How to measure SEO and GEO separately
SEO metrics
- GSC impressions, clicks, CTR and average position;
- query-to-page matches and positions 8–20 opportunities;
- organic landing pages, engagement and form/key events;
- index coverage, canonical URLs, sitemap health and page experience.
GEO metrics
GEO has no meaningful universal “score” outside a sampling protocol. Build a fixed set of, for example, 60–120 buyer-intent prompts. Keep the platforms, language, region, date and run count consistent. Record:
- whether the brand is mentioned;
- whether it is cited as a source;
- which URL or passage is cited;
- whether the brand’s role and facts are accurate;
- where it appears in the answer;
- whether assistant referrals reach the site.
Repeated runs matter because generative answers can vary by time, platform and prompt. Report the trend and the sample scope; do not turn one answer into a stable market-share claim.
Three common mistakes
Mistake one: do GEO first and fix technical SEO later
If a page cannot be crawled, indexed, rendered or discovered through internal links, generative search has no dependable source. Google’s AI-search guidance still requires a page to meet normal Search technical requirements and be eligible for a searchable snippet. Google: AI Features and Your Website
Mistake two: publish ten articles for one keyword
Rewriting the same question does not automatically create topical authority. It can split internal links and page signals. A stronger approach is one page with a clear primary intent, supported by comparison, risk and service pages for adjacent questions.
Mistake three: treat an AI mention as a conversion
Being mentioned is a visibility event. It may have no link, describe the brand incorrectly or place it in the wrong comparison context. The business test remains qualified traffic, page engagement, enquiry quality and revenue-related events.
The operating principle
The strongest SEO-and-GEO workflow is not two content calendars. It is one content asset that passes five tests: it answers a real question, can be crawled and indexed, states claims with evidence and boundaries, is easy for a person to understand, and can be measured separately in search and answer systems.
SEO helps content enter a discoverable search system. GEO adds the question of whether that content can be understood and attributed inside an answer. The shared asset is not a keyword. It is clear, true, verifiable content that someone is willing to maintain.
