Yes, like many moms, my mom was a fanatical dieter. Yet, I was an overweight kid. So I started Weight Watchers (for the first time, but not the last) in the 5th grade. I was the only child there. All the women thought I was really cute. But, really, how sad is that?!
My mom didn’t know about exercise and nutrition. Not many people did in the 80’s. My mom was a single parent working long hours to put my sister and I through private schools. She didn’t know what to do to help us maintain a healthy weight. I don’t blame her one little bit. So much of what we thought about weight loss in the 80’s has been proven to be absolutely false (and completely ridiculous in many circumstances.) So much had changed since the days of those nutty fad diets, thank goodness!
We now know that you must balance diet and exercise, as they compliment each other beautifully. We know that carbs are our friends if we pick the right ones. We know that certain fats are essential for weight loss. We know that long steady state cardio is not the most efficient exercise for fat loss. We know that resistance training is imperative to bump up your metabolism.
Wow – if only we knew all this when I was that overweight teen, hiding behind my super baggy clothes, living in fear of each and every PE class. If only we had know this when my mother and grandmother struggled to lose weight after having kids.
I struggled with this my entire childhood and into my adulthood. To this day I have body insecurities from being an overweight for so much of my life. I would say it’s one of the biggest challenges of my life.
My own weight loss journey began when I went away to college. I was a good 40 pounds overweight and I set out on a secret mission to become a runner. I ran all alone on a trail where no one could see me. I was scared to death my peers would see me trudging along, painstakingly slow, looking ridiculous. All that bottled up dread and fear over PE class was still very much a part of me.
Over the course of a few years as exercise became a part of my daily life, I began to see myself as an athlete and it completely changed me. I lost a bunch of weight. During this time I did a lot of stupid things to lose weight. Things that got in the way of me improving my running. Things that even compromised my health. Things I have a hard time talking about today. Looking back it is so obvious to me that I could have lost all my weight in half the time and become a running super star if knew what I know today about nutrition and exercise. But I was a young college kid and I thought I knew it all.
In my mid twenties I became much healthier in my diet and exercise habits. I started running half marathons, then a full marathon and competed in a ton of triathlons. Even got a few trophies!
The picture on the right is me about to cross the finish line of a marathon. I wish I had a picture of me at Mile 22 kicking, screaming, swearing and crying, convinced Mile 26 would never show itself. That’s where the real fun was. Yup, me all tear stained, snotty and sweaty. A real Hot Mess.
I have to tell you, becoming fit changed EVERYTHING about my life. How I see myself. How others see me. How I interact with my friends, my family, my husband. This is why, in 2003, I left my career working with emotionally disturbed children to change the lives of women and moms. I feel so passionately that moms don’t have to have the insecurities I had for so many years. Deep down, at my most inner being, I know the following to be true:

Q: How long after childbirth do I need to wait to begin the program?
A: There are really two answers to this question. You can start the nutrition component right away. However, for best results, I recommend starting the entire program (nutrition + workouts at once.) In order to do this you’ll need to have your doctor’s permission to exercise. For a vaginal delivery, most doctors will allow you to being exercise 4-6 weeks after delivery. If you had a c-section, most doctor’s will allow you to start exercising after 6-8 weeks.
Q: Can I do this program if I had a C-Section?

Q: Are there vegetarian options in the nutrition plan?
A: Yes! I have included many vegetarian recipes. Additionally, most recipes can be modified to be made vegetarian.
Q: What if I had my baby one or two YEARS ago?
A: No problem. I get this all the time. Remember the mom I told you about who came to see me when her son was NINE YEARS OLD to work on losing her “baby” weight?!
